Many of you know me as a member of the Girl Camper Executive Team and as the Iowa Guide…… but did you know that I’m also a Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Aromatherapist? I’ve been tossing around the idea of starting a blog series “Aromatherapy Corner” and this is my first article to that end. Let’s talk about my Campground Calm: An Aromatherapy Blend for Relaxation in the Wild.

We all deserve a little peace.

After a full day of hiking, setting up camp, and maybe wrangling a stubborn camp stove, your body and mind deserve a little peace. Aromatherapy is one of my favorite ways to unwind at the end of an outdoor adventure. It’s lightweight, natural, and incredibly effective. One of my go-to blends for camping is “Campground Calm”—a simple yet powerful roll-on that soothes bug bites, supports sleep, and helps you settle into the rhythms of the forest.

Campground Calm Roll-On Recipe:

  • 10ml glass roller bottle – brown glass is best.
  • 8 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 4 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
  • 2 drops Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
  • 2 drops Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
  • Fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil

Lavender is the star here, known for its calming and skin-soothing properties. Cedarwood adds a grounding, woodsy aroma that pairs beautifully with evenings around the campfire. Patchouli offers emotional grounding, and Roman Chamomile is excellent for easing restlessness.

To use, apply to your wrists, temples, or the back of your neck before bed or anytime you need a moment of calm. It also doubles as a gentle bite soother thanks to lavender’s anti-inflammatory properties.

Tips for Trail Use:

  • Store in a cool, dark place (a shaded pocket in your pack works fine – and the brown glass bottle will protect from sunlight)
  • Label clearly – it’s easy to forget down the road what essential oils you used for your blend.
  • Always patch-test before first use!

Whether you’re in a tent or under the stars, a touch of aromatherapy can bring a little spa to your campsite. Campground Calm is proof that peace and nature go hand in hand—no plug-ins required.
