On May 17-19, a group of hungry women, and one small bread-loving child, got together to make and break bread. They learned how to make sourdough bread from start to finish—from feeding their starter to baking and eating. We found that while making sourdough bread over the campfire was not without its difficulties, the result was some of the best bread we’ve ever tasted! Everything tastes better when made over a campfire, right? Our baking tasks were accomplished at Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park (Bertram Park) in Monticello, MN.

Positives

The Bertram Park Campground has many positive camping attributes. The first is that the park is a modern campground with 38 RV sites and 6 air-conditioned camper cabins. “Of the 38 RV sites, 24 of them are full-service sites with 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer hook ups. The remaining 14 sites have 50-amp electrical service and water hook ups. The campground development includes a contact station and comfort station in addition to the campsites and cabins” (https://www.co.wright.mn.us/Facilities/Facility/Details/Bertram-Chain-of-Lakes-Regional-Park-52).

In addition to camping, Bertram Park has:

  • bike trails–14 miles of single-track mountain bike trails
  • fishing–water access to Bertram Lake and a carry-in access to Long Lake which allows users to paddle to Long, Mud, and First Lakes
  • hiking/walking trails–nearly 7.5 miles of hiking/walking trails
  • meeting rooms
  • picnic areas and picnic shelters
  • a playground
  • a swimming beach
  • a WATERPARK with a huge waterslide!!

It was so peaceful in the mornings. I had a cup of coffee and turned on my bird identification application and identified 21 birds in under one hour. There were birds in the grasses, and in the nearby woods. The evenings were quiet with the enforcement of quiet hours from 10 PM until 6 AM.

Negatives

This sounds like the perfect campground, but there is one negative. We were there in May, which was the perfect time of the year for this campground. This was due to the fact that the campground has only been open since 2021. The campground has few mature trees, which means that there is very little shade for the hottest times of the year.

Bertram Park gave us a beautiful location to learn about baking bread, and it has so many positives that I plan to go back this fall. Have any of you been to a county campground? Which is your favorite?
