LOCATION: Nestled in the corner of South Western Minnesota, Blue Mounds State Park in Luverne Minnesota is named after the magnificent Sioux quartzite cliff, rising 100 feet from the prairie which appeared blue to early settlers giving the park it’s name. (Note that there is also a Blue Mounds State Park in Wisconsin.)

NUMBER OF SITES: Blue Mounds State Park main campground has 71 campsites in 3 loops, 52 sites are electric. There is one electric ADA site and one non-electric. Most of the sites are nicely shaded. There is a cart-in campground with 14 sites and also three Tipis that can be reserved! It’s wise to make reservations well in advance, especially if you’re planning to visit during peak seasons or weekends.

WHY I LOVE THIS CAMPGROUND: The herd of Bison is the main attraction at Blue Mounds State Park and they have their own fenced in range. The Mound Trail runs adjacent to the bison range so it is likely that you will catch a glimpse of the bison at some point. There are three Bison Observation areas in the park. You can also buy a ticket for the Bison Tour and ride in the 12 passenger tour “bus” inside the bison range to get a closer look.

MY FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: The park’s trails are perfect for hikers of all skill levels, offering amazing views of the prairie landscape and the iconic Sioux quartzite cliff. Birdwatchers will be in paradise, with opportunities to spot rare species such as the blue grosbeak and the cliff swallow. There are 3 miles of paved bike trail, a Nature Play Area for kids and rock climbing!

MY FAVORITE MEMORY: Seeing Prickly Pear Cactus growing wild in Minnesota!

TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS For the best experience, visit Blue Mounds State Park during the spring or early fall when the weather is mild and the park is less crowded. Be sure to bring binoculars for bird watching and wildlife spotting, and don’t forget your camera to capture the stunning landscapes. Hiking shoes are recommended, as the terrain can be rugged in places and are mostly mown grass with some paved sections. Check the park’s website for updates on trail conditions and bison sightings to make the most of your visit.
