Burlington Bay Campground on Lake Superior

I love Lake Superior, it never looks the same two days, let alone two hours in a row. The sunshine glints off the water, but I especially love the big storms. My favorite time on the lake was November of 2013. A friend offered me her condo in Two Harbors for a week after Thanksgiving. I was right on the water! The first two days were beautiful with sunshine and calm water. Then, the gales of November hit! There was over 3 feet of snow that fell in under 12 hours on the Highway, but all I had was ice coated grass. The weather was miserable for animals, such as the otter I saw rushing from the water to hide near the condo, but I LOVED that weather. I stoked up the fire and hunkered down to watch the huge waves hit the shore and splash the condo.

Great camping on the big lake

Unfortunately, I am not able to stay at those condos on a regular basis, but I am able to camp in the same area at my favorite campground, Burlington Bay Campground (https://www.twoharborsmn.gov/city_departments/burlington_bay_campground/index.php). This campground is owned by the city of Two Harbors and has everything a camper could want. All of the campsites either are next to the lakeshore or have views of the lake. There is nothing like watching the sunrise over Lake Superior. This campground is located at Highway 61 and Park Road. It has the following:

  • 66 sites with water and electric hook-ups
  • 36 sites with water, electric and sewer hook-ups
  • 34 sites with water, sewer and 50 amp electric hook-ups
  • 10 primitive tent sites
  • Wireless internet, a dump station, firewood, and ice available on-site
  • Two new bathhouses

Area attractions

Burlington Bay Campground is well maintained, peaceful, and everyone is friendly. Each campsite has a picnic table and a campfire ring. There are walking trails along the water from the campground down to the ore docks and the lighthouse, which is now a Bed and Breakfast. There are restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance. The entire area has a vibe that encourages everyone to take a deep breath, slow down, enjoy the scenery, and be lulled to sleep at night by the waves on the shore.

Hopefully, if you ever stay at Burlington Bay Campground, you’ll be fortunate enough to have days of sunshine and calm water followed by a big storm with waves that crash over 100 foot cliffs. You will forever be chasing the next big storm.
