Hollow Rock Resort – Grand Portage MN

Jan 10, 2025 | 0 comments

The Hollow Rock Resort is located on the shore of Lake Superior right off of Hwy 61, just south of Grand Portage MN. The resort is run by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. Check in is at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino about 3.5 miles away.

NUMBER OF SITES: There are 7 cabins in the resort, almost all are lakefront.

WHY I LOVE THIS RESORT: The location of the Hollow Rock Resort cannot be beat if you are exploring the Lake Superior North Shore near the Canadian border. You have easy access to Grand Portage State Park and Grand Portage National Monument. The resort is very close to the Canadian Border – we spent an afternoon hiking near Thunder Bay. There are charters nearby that will take you to Isle Royale National Park in the summer.

MY FAVORITE SITE: We stayed in Cabin #8 “The Crane” and had a stunning bay view of the lake, I recommend renting a cabin with a view of Hollow Rock if possible.

FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Rock hunting on the Hollow Rock Resort beach, visiting Grand Portage National Monument and Grand Portage State Park. We took a drive on old Hwy 61 that used to be the crossing into Canada, and now just dead ends at the Pigeon river.

MY FAVORITE MEMORY: A sunset bonfire in front of the cabin overlooking Lake Superior. There is nothing more relaxing!

TIPS FOR HOLLOW ROCK RESORT FIRST-TIME VISITORS

You will need to check in and out at the Grand Portage Casino. In our case the previous guest apparently did not return the key and there were no copies. We actually had to enter through an unlocked window (the security guard was with us.) We never did get a key to the cabin so we brought our valuables with us if we left, however we rarely saw anyone around and it felt very safe.

There is a tv however no tv reception or internet and very limited cell service at the cabins. Cabin beds and bathrooms are very clean. They supplied clean towels. There was no room service during our stay. I had to clean the microwave and refrigerator. Being a former VRBO Cabin owner I am very picky about this and I am guessing the hotel cleaning staff is not used to maintaining a cabin. All of this did not detract from our stay as we were expecting rustic accomodations.

Bring your own coffee and filters. The cabins are nice and the location is amazing.

HOLLOW ROCK RESORT AMENITIES:

The Trading Post at the Grand Portage Casino will have basic groceries, you may want to shop in Duluth or Grand Marais on your way up.

There is a restaurant, pool and fitness center at the casino – we did not use those amenities.

The cabin had a gas fireplace, tv (no reception) refrigerator, stove and microwave.

There are no additional amenities or staff at the resort.

COST:

Rates for the Hollow Rock Resort are seasonal and run between $160 – $300 per night with a 2 night minimum.
