The Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) holds over 30,000 works of art and is the largest art museum in Wisconsin. This architectural landmark is a go-to destination in Milwaukee. What began in 1888 near the Cathedral Square, has developed into a winged marvel against Lake Michigan. MAM is comprised of three buildings: The War Memorial Center, The Cudahy Gardens, and the famous Quadracci Pavilion. The Quadracci Pavilion was designed by a Spanish architect (Santiago Calatrava) and was completed in 2001. The moveable sunscreen, called the Burke Brise Soleil, has a 217-foot wingspan that opens/closes twice per day.
New Year’s Resolution
January 1, 2023: My husband and I love exploring our state. From the outdoors to culturally enriching activities. On this day, we decided to visit the Milwaukee Art Museum. Aside from my usual New Year’s resolutions (exercise more, eat healthier, etc.), I also want to broaden my mind and learn new things. What a better way to start than to go to the art museum? My favorite works include modern art and the local artists exhibits. For example: Georgia O’Keeffe. She was born in Sun Prairie, WI and they have a vast collection of her artwork. She was known as the “mother of American modernism” and is most famous for her paintings of enlarged flowers.
What an inspirational place.
Walking throughout MAM gives you a sense of history and creativity. I swear, I left there in awe and ready to create. From paintings, to sculptures, to models and clocks, the Milwaukee Art Museum has everything. MAM is open Wednesday through Sunday at 10:00 AM. Show up early as you will need several hours just to explore the museum. Add the grounds and gardens, and you’ll make a day of it. I recommend bringing a lunch to enjoy on the shores of Lake Michigan or explore the many restaurants nearby.
