The Shipwreck Creek Campground is located within the Split Rock Light House State Park in Two Harbors Minnesota. While the campground is not on Lake Superior, the state park is on the lake and it serves as the perfect base camp to visit numerous state parks on the North Shore. The beautiful birch and pine trees and natural rock outcroppings throughout the campground definitely give it the northern Minnesota feel.

NUMBER OF SITES: There are 46 Sites at Shipwreck Creek Campground – all are electric. You can access a map of the campground here.

WHY I LOVE THIS CAMPGROUND: Because the Shipwreck Creek Campground is relatively new, the bathhouse is clean and modern. There are also vault toilets throughout the campground. The sites are larger (most 70′ long) and not crowded together.
MY FAVORITE SITE: We stayed in site 113, which was next to a small pond. This site felt quite “private”and was in close proximity to water, vault toilets and walkable to the bathhouse.

MY FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: We took the Split Rock Light House Tour and visited the museum and gift shop. The Little Two Harbors Trail is accessed from the Light House parking lot and we took this trail down to the Pebble Beach and other scenic views and picnic sites right on the lake. There are 12 miles of paved hiking trail and connections to the Superior Hiking Trail. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail also runs through the park and provides 15 miles of paved bike trail. There are mountain bike trails and carry in canoe and kayak access in the park.

MY FAVORITE MEMORY: Because this is a newer park, the campsites at Shipwreck Creek Campground are fairly open with smaller trees. I was able to take wonderful timelapse videos of the stars at night. We hiked the trail from the beautiful Split Rock River beach (accessed by an underpass under Hwy 61) and up the hill to a waterfall.
TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS There are no dump stations or water fill stations at this park. There is a water spigot near the bath house and throughout the campground. There are dump stations available in Silver Bay and Two Harbors. Firewood purchase are made on the “Yodel Portal” app, download that app before your trip.
