Not everyone wants to race down mountains on skis, but that doesn’t mean skiing is off the table for those who want to get out in winter without the often high price tag of downhill skiing or that particular skill set. Cross-country skiing is fun and accessible, not to mention a great aerobic activity. Other benefits include that it’s fairly easy to learn, you don’t need expensive gear and there is a lower risk of injuries. And no need to wait for a ski lift!
For those who have never cross-country skied before, definitely start with a lesson. A couple of hours being coached by a professional instructor will teach you the correct form and get you started on this fun sport. Cross country skiing can appeal to anyone from hikers to snow shoe fans to those who want a tranquil winter activity.
Layer Up
It may be tempting to bundle up to combat cold winter weather, but what you need to do is dress in layers for activities like skiing. Once you get moving, you will quickly heat up, but you definitely do not want to get overheated. Your base layer, the one worn closest to your body, should be made of synthetic or wool material that dries quickly and moves sweat away from your body so you don’t get cold. Add a middle layer, such as a fleece or lightweight puffy jacket. Finally, your outer layer should be a water-resistant, windproof and breathable jacket. Of course, a hat and gloves are a must. Clothes that allow you to regulate your temperature are best. Look for items with lots of vents and zippers.
