Overlanding is one of the fastest growing and hottest segments of the RV industry. Basically, some refer to it as boondocking, but overlanding takes boondocking to the next level. In fact, overlanding is all about the course, the route, the path. It’s not always the fastest, but the most technical, off-road route. So to get there, you need to have a specially outfitted vehicle designed for hardcore adventure. Here are five overlanders for the ultimate adventure.
AT Overland

One of the biggest names in the RV industry launched its first true overlander called the Revel recently. Winnebago based it on a Mercedes Sprinter Chassis with a 3.0 Liter turbo diesel under the hood. The absolute coolest feature on the Revel is the Power Lift Bed. You can adjust the bed to any height inside the van, providing space for storage below. For cooking, it has an induction cook top and sink. Adventure Wagon
If you aren’t sure if a Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter is the right fit for you, Adventure Wagon offers a step-by-step website that allows you to scale up or down to completely customize a rig for your needs. It takes a bit of time, but it really helps you understand all that you’re getting. Here’s the kicker: they offer both installation or the ability to DIY. You can save a lot of money if you do the work. DIY kits start around $14,000 or you can opt for a van starting at $41,300 and customize from there. adventurewagon.com
Sportsmobile
This is the Class B gold standard for design and manufacture of the best off-road-capable, purpose-built vehicle to tackle any obstacle. Moreover, they’ve been at it for more than 30 years and it’s the ultimate conversion van purpose-built for rock crawling, scaling mountains, wading through snow and more. The Sportsmobile Classic 4×4, built on the Ford Econoline, has the most capable parts for true overlanding, including a 7.3 Liter V8 motor, Massive Dynatrac front axle and a Dana 60 rear, Fox Shox, Spicer 1350 driveline components, front sway bar with disconnect and big Ford F550 brake rotors. The exterior is all carbon fiber, which is what F1 race cars are built from and it’s 29 feet long and 12 feet tall. It can travel up to 1,000 miles on 90 gallons of fuel, has a massive front grille with integrated 16,000-pound winch, military grade tires, onboard air compressor for airing your tires down or up and can store up to 100 gallons of fresh water.
