A day trip floating on this Nebraska river is a great way to take in the sights, cool down and goof off with girlfriends on the water. Girl Campers hit the Niobrara National Scenic River in Nebraska last year for a float trip that included water bumper cars, squirt guns and a stop at the Smith Falls State Park for a waterfall hike and group lunch.
Sharp’s Outfitters hosted us.
Sharp’s Outfitters in Sparks, Nebraska hosted us and provided the equipment and transportation to our starting point. We had the choice of a kayak, canoe, single or multi-person high-quality lounging raft for our outing. Our 8-mile float started at 10 am and around 4 pm, we landed right on the shores of the Sharp’s Family Campground, where we were camping. This small family-run campground offers an ideal location for an adventure like this.
A great way to spend a day.
River floating is the leisurely cousin to white water rafting and is a fun way to spend a day. If you have never done it before or are in a new area, it’s best to find an outfitter who can provide you with the right gear, transport you to the launch area, pick you up at your exit point and provide you with any passes you may need. You can generally find outfitters in areas where there is a shallow river.
Would you like to float or paddle?
You’ll want to decide what type of rafting experience you want to have. Do you just want to float on a tube or do you want to paddle in a kayak? The amount of time you want to be on the water will dictate how far you’ll be floating. Generally, river floating can run from $15 to $65 per person, depending on where you are, what equipment you are renting and what services your outfitter is providing. Like any outdoor activity, having the right equipment is key, so do a little homework and make sure to check out our recommendations for must-have float gear, from water shoes to sun hats.
