As far as we’re concerned, Thanksgiving dessert must involve pie! In keeping with our “Super Simple Thanksgiving Supper,” we broke out the pie irons so everyone could create their own version of their favorite Thanksgiving pie. Our method is foolproof (really!) and allows all your guests to participate in the making and sharing of dessert and isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about? 

What You Need 

  • Pie irons
  • Soft white sandwich bread 
  • Softened butter 
  • Pie fillings of your choice
  • Toppings (like whipped cream or cinnamon) 

Tips 

  • Use a well-seasoned pie iron 
  • Soft white sandwich bread makes the best “crust”
  • Make sure butter is room temperature 
  • Chop the fruit filling into small pieces 
  • Butter the outside of the bread and fill the inside
  • Cut off any excess crust that sticks out 
  • Let cool for several minutes before eating
  • Use store bought or homemade filling. 
  • If the store bought is too sweet, rinse it off in a colander. 
  • It’s okay to peek and see if your crust is browning up. 
  • Toast close to the coals, but not on them.
